The Book of Common Prayer... and how it got that way.

11:15AM in the Library
Presentor: Susan Thurman

From Susan:

This class is meant to provide a foundation for future, deeper study.  In it I hope to provide a brief survey of the relevant political and religious issues, major events and influential people from those dangerous and dynamic years in England surrounding the creation and publishing of the Book of Common Prayer in 1549.  We will focus on Thomas Cranmer, the author (some might say “compiler”) of that celebrated Book.  If we have time we can look at Cranmer’s sources for the content of the book itself and how it was structured to encourage his vision of a new way for Christians to worship that continues around the world today.

P.s.  I read The Book of Common Prayer, A Biography by Alan Jacobs to prepare for our class.  Mr. Jacobs is a religious historian currently at Baylor University and is the author of many books and articles in the field.
